What a Forward Deployed Engineer actually doesQué hace de verdad un Forward Deployed Engineer

Not a consultant who visits, and not a help desk you call. An engineer who works inside your business.

The title comes from software companies that send engineers to sit with their customers instead of waiting for tickets. We borrowed it because it describes the job better than anything else: a Forward Deployed Engineer is deployed forward, into your business, where the work actually happens.

Why the usual models break

Most companies have lived through two kinds of technology help. The first is the implementation project. A team arrives, gathers requirements, builds a system, and leaves. It works on the day they leave and starts drifting the week after, because the business keeps changing and nobody is left who understands both sides. The second is the support desk. You open a ticket, someone who has never seen your operation reads it, and the answer fits the software but not your business.

Both models treat your company as a project with an end date. Your business does not have an end date. It hires, it loses a supplier, it opens a new line, it changes how it prices. Every one of those changes touches the system.

What the engineer does, week to week

A Forward Deployed Engineer is assigned to your business and stays. In practice, the work looks like this:

  • Learning your operation in detail: the people, the exceptions, the reasons behind the rules in your operating manual.
  • Adjusting the system when the business changes, so a new product line or a new approval does not wait months for a project.
  • Building and maintaining the automations that take routine work off your team.
  • Watching what the system and its automations actually do, and fixing what drifts before it becomes a problem.
  • Bringing in new technology when it is useful to you, and saying no when it is not.

The engineer is not a salesperson for more features. The measure of the job is simple: your system should match how your business works today, not how it worked when it was installed.

Knowing the business is the hard part

Any competent engineer can configure software. What takes time is knowing that your best customer always pays late but always pays, that the night shift counts stock differently, that a certain supplier needs orders confirmed by phone. That knowledge is what makes changes fast and safe. It is also exactly what is lost every time a project team rotates out. Keeping one engineer close to your business keeps that knowledge where it is useful.

From our engineer to yours

For many companies, having our engineer is the right long-term setup. Others want to own the capability. In that case we help you choose the right person inside your company, train them with weekly mentoring, and certify them, so that after the first year your own engineer runs the system and keeps improving it. Either way, the principle is the same: someone who understands both your business and your technology is always in the room.

Technology will keep changing faster than any one-off project can follow. An engineer who stays is how your system keeps up.
